왜 ‘위대한' 개츠비일까 - 22회 졸지에 술주정뱅이가 되어버린 사내, 정말일까? 아닐까?

이정서씨가 기존 번역서의 오역때문에 졸지에 술주정뱅이가 되어버렸다고 하는 사내가 나오는 장면은 Chapter 3 중 대목으로 서술자 닉이 처음으로 개츠비의 파티에 참석한 날, 마지막 파티장을 떠나는 차량 중 한대가 벽에 부칮쳐 바퀴가 빠져버리는 사고가 난다. 우선 더스터를 입은 사내가 그 차량으로부터 나타난다. (A man in a long duster had dismounted from the wreck) 관중과 더스터를 입은 사내 사이에 오해와 혼란을 일으키는 대화가 있은 후, 정작 운전자인 남자가 차로부터 나온다. (a pale dangling individual stepped out of the wreck)

이정서씨는 더스트 코트 사내와 운전자를 분간하지 못하고 한 사람으로 착각한 듯 하다.

Mr. Lee seems not to have noticed that "the man in the duster" is not the one who says "no harm in trying."

The man unwittingly accused of being a drunkard

이 장에서 우선 눈여겨볼 대목은 부서진 차에서 먼저 빠져나와 사건을 수습하려는 더스트 코트 사내의 말투다. 작가는 여기서 남의 눈을 의식하지 않는 그의 자세를 통해 그 인물의 캐릭터를 보여주려는 것인데, 기존의 번역서는 단지 한 명의 술주정꾼이 벌인 해프닝처럼 희화화 시켜버렸다. 이런 식이다.

The part that requires a particular attention in this paragraph is the tone of the speech by the man in the duster, who first comes out of the wrecked car, and then tries to take care of the situation.  The author (Fitzgerald) is trying to demonstrate here this individual’s character through his attitude of not minding other people’s opinions; however, the current translation caricatures it into an episode of a drunkard.

역자는 원문의 wha's, I din’이라는 약자가 쓰인 것을 보고 저렇게 술 취한 사람 말투로 옮긴 것 같은데, 여기서 저 축약을 그런 의미로 좁혀버리면 소설의 맥을 끊게 되는 것이다. 아마 피츠제럴드가 저렇게 쓴 이유는 당시의 고어로 대화체에서는 흔한 축약처럼 보인다. 우리말 조사를 생략하듯. 문법적으로 이해하자면, 미국인은 거의 ‘t’ 발음을 하지 않는데, 말을 조용히 하다 보니 아예 옆 사람에게는 부정의 의미(not)가 거의 들리지 않았다는 것을 의미하는 것이다. 저것이 갑자기 만취한 자의 늘어진 말투로 바뀌려면 지문에서 어떤 식으로든 설명이 있어야 하는 것이다. ‘술에 취한 그의 말은 심하게 어그러졌다’는 식의... 그것이 소설인 것이다.

It seems that the translator, noticing the contractions, translated the original text’s “wha’s” and “I din’” as a drunkard’s speech, [but] if the contractions are limited to have such meaning here, the continuity of the novel is interrupted.  I surmised that perhaps the reason Fitzgerald wrote that way is that [“wha’s” and “I din’”] are archaic words of the period that were generally contracted in dialogues.  [...]  Grammatically speaking, Americans rarely pronounce ‘t’, [...] If these [words] were suddenly to become slurred words of a drunkard, there has to be an explanation in some way within the passage. For example, “The speech by the drunken [man] was very slurred”...That is a novel [writing].

     마음이 허락하는 시간 동안

성실한 한 시간이란 뜻.  마음이 허락한다니?  

2.    “[...] explained to him that wheel and car were no longer joined by any physical bond.”  

그에게 바퀴와 차는 이제 어떤 물리적 결합으로도 더 이상 합쳐질 수 없다고 알려주었다.

더 이상 붙어 있지 않다는 뜻. 앞으로 합쳐질 수 없다는 뜻이 아님.

3.    “but her brother began throwing mean looks in my direction,”

그녀의 오빠가 내 장래에 대해 마땅치 않아 하는 시선을 던졌으므로,  

because her brother threw disapproving looks about my future

장래라는 뜻은 전혀 없음. 내 방향, 즉 나를 향해 험한 시선을 던졌다는 뜻임.
