이정서씨가 기존 번역을 비교, 비평하는 Chapter 6 중 대목의 줄거리는 서술자 닉의 톰과 데이지의 집 첫 방문으로, 저녁 식사 테이블에서 일어나는 대화다. 데이지는 자신의 멍든 손매듭을 보며 그것이 톰때문이라고 하고 톰이 싫어하는 hulking 이란 형용사로 그를 부른다. 참고로 The Incredible Hulk 는 1960년대 나온 만화 인물이다.

아무튼 지금 이 대목은 데이지가 은근히 톰을 비난하는 것은 맞습니다. 그러나 한편 보면 귀엽게, 상대를 높여주면서 은근하게 비난하는 것입니다.

At any rate, it is right that Daisy is gently criticizing Tom in this passage.  But, you can say that she is criticizing sweetly, and gently while respecting the other person (Tom).

"You did it, Tom," she said accusingly. "I know you didn't mean to but you did do it. That's what I get for marrying a brute of a man, a great big hulking physical specimen of a man "

"I hate that word hulking," objected Tom crossly, "even in kidding."

여기서의 쿨은 요즘 우리가 일반적으로 쓰는 ‘뒤끝 없다’ ‘쌈박하다’는 의미의 ‘쿨하다’인 것입니다.
