노인과 바다 - 1

“He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty and he always went down to help him carry either the coiled lines or the gaff and harpoon and the sail that was furled around the mast. The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat.” 

헤밍웨이의 <노인과 바다>의 첫 문단이다. 

해석하면,

1. He was an old man 
그는 노인이었다 => 뭘 하는?

2. who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream*
조각배를 타고 멕시코 만류에서 홀로 고기잡이를 하는

*Gulf Stream (=걸프만류, 멕시코만류)

3. and he had gone eighty-four days now* 
현재/오늘/지금 그는 84일을 지냈다 => 뭘 하고?

4. without taking a fish.
고기를 한 마리도 낚지 못하고

* Eighty four days had gone 84일이 지났다 라고 하지 않고 he had gone ...이라고 노인에 중점을 두어 그의 (고기를 오랫동안 잡지 못한) 상태에 관심을 끈다.

첫 사십일 간은 소년 하나가 노인과 함께 했었다. ( = 바다에/고기 잡으러 나갔었다.)

6. But after forty days without a fish 
하지만 고기 한마리 잡지 못하고 40일이 지나자

7. the boy’s parents had told him that 
소년의 부모가 소년에게 말했다 => 뭐라고 말했나?

8. the old man was now definitely and finally* salao*, 
그 노인은 분명히, 또 확실히 salao 이다 => salao 가 뭔가?

*definitely and finally
*salao ( = salado, 소금에 절은, 즉 운이 아주 나쁘다는 센 말. 배를 타는 사람들에게 소금에 절는 것은 적어도 물에 빠지는 것이니 운이 아주 나쁘다고 짐작 해석)

9. which is the worst form of unlucky, 
(salao 는) 운이 나쁜 것 중에 가장 나쁜 종류다

10. and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat 
그래서 소년은 부모님의 지시/말씀을 따라 다른 배로 갔다 => 그 배는 어땠나?

11. which caught three good fish the first week. 
(바다에 나간) 첫 주에 (크기가 꽤 크든지 돈을 많이 받을 수 있든지 한 이유로) 괜찮은 고기 세 마리를 잡았었다

12. It made the boy sad 
(아래 나오는 문구가) 소년을 슬프게 했다

13. to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty 
노인이 매일 빈 배로 돌아오는 것을 보는 것은 (소년을 슬프게 했고)

14. and he always went down 
소년은 늘 (노인의 배가 들어오는 곳으로) 내려갔다 => 왜 내려 갔나?

15. to help him carry 
노인이 나르는 것을 도와주려고 => 뭘 나르나?

16. either the coiled lines or the gaff and harpoon 
둥글게 감아 놓은 낚싯줄이나 갈고리와 작살이던지나

17. and the sail that was furled around the mast. 
또, 돛대에 감긴 돛을 (나르는 것을…)

18. The sail was patched with flour sacks 
돛은 밀가루 부대로 기워져 있었고

19. and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat. 
감겨 있을 때/감긴 모습은 그것은 영원한/영구적 패배의 깃발처럼 보였다.

박문규 Gulf of Mexico 는 걸프만이라는 지역 개념이고, Gulf Stream은 걸프해류 = 멕시코만류로 고유명사이며, 걸프만에서 플로리다를 거쳐 대서양으로 흐르는 조류입니다. 
멕시코만류라고 번역하는 것이 무동력선인 skiff를 타고 멕시코만류의 조류 흐름을 탄 고기잡이를 하는 것을 제대로 표현하는 것 같습니다.

Jeongwoo Lee Gulf가 灣이니까 Gulf stream은 灣流겠죠.
